How do I subscribe to podcasts via iPad?

I know how to use the iTunes app to download podcasts, but I don't know how to have it downloads them automatically.

Suggestions? Doing it manually is a pain.

You can't. That has to be done via iTunes. Then sync with your iPad.

That's really unfortunate. I don't like being tethered to my pc like that - especially with a net-connected device.

These are the types of things that leave me unconvinced about this impressive device.

There are a number of issues I'd like for them to address.

There is an iPhone app called rss player. It will send you push notifications when a new podcast you have subscribed to has come out. But like many other third party apps it will not run in the background.
