Probably cause you can’t pair in using the lightning adapter that is no longer there.

No. Charging it is not enough. It must be paired with the iPad Pro.

During the Apple event it was announced that the old pencil wouldn't work with the new iPads. The old pencils are charged and paired via Lightning connection. New pencils are charged and paired via wireless. The old and new pencils / iPads are not compatible with each other.

Get PO'ed all you want.
