Hi, I can confirm this. I have a 12 inch ipad pro on latest ios (as of 29 dec 2017) and 87W charger and a 1m usb-c to lightning cable. Charging does not work.
The literature on the 87W power adapter says it only supports output combinations of 1) 20.2V@4.3A 2) 9V@3A 3) 5.2V@2.4A that is to say it does not output at 14.5V@2A which has been stated by Serenity as required for fast charging. Secondly, the usb-c to lightning cable does not even seem to ‘latch on’ (click sound) properly to the 87W adapter (whereas the usb-c to usb-c cable I got with the 87W adapter itself does attach properly)...so I think there’s a difference in the pin architecture/layout of the usb-c to lightning cable. So now I’ve separately ordered the 29W adapter. Will report back once I get it.

I use my 61W charger to charge my Air 2 and my Pro 12.9” and it works fine. I use it to fast charge my X as well. I wonder if it’s specific to the 87W charger

Is the 87W adapter recommended for the iPad Pro 12.9"? Everything I read until recently says that the Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter is the correct one to use for quick charging the 12.9 along with the USB-C to Lightning connector, although neither come with the iPad. I don't have a Macbook.

I use the 29W Charging adapter with a USB-C to lightning cable and adapter with my iPad Pro 2, it charges without issue. I traded in my MBP for an iMac PRO so I no longer have the other charging adapter.

I have an 87W power brick for my MacBook Pro 15" and I've used it to fast charge my iPad Pro 12.9 2018. I believe it will only draw the power maximum that it needs and works great.
