it physically fits, but it isn't "smart" anymore, since the magnets aren't aligned in the right way.

the cover will sticks, but sleep and wake won't work.

The batteries are in different locations in the iPad Pro 9.7", so the sleep/wake function won't work with an iPad Air 2 Smart Cover. Magnets are magnets, so I'd guess they will mechanically function normally, sticking to the metal parts.

It will not stay on as they moved the magnets as those above said. This is another example of Apple moving things maybe for a technical reason, or economic reasons...

It's all good. Purchased an UAG case. It's perfect.

In this case there are technical reasons since the iPads are internally quite different.
