So the obvious is the size of the screen. But how different are the software/hardware specs?

iPad Pro - Technical Specifications - Apple This is the list of the differences from Apple's website. The smaller iPad pro does have a true tone display which changes based on the ambient color temperature of the room that you are in and I think there are some differences in the RAM on each device but I hope this link helps.

9.7 has better camera, better screen display technology; but 12.9 has double the ram, and clocked a little faster.
