    They're likely using a same camera from the iPad Air 2. You need a bigger sensor for 4K, because it's a 4:3 sensor not a 16:9 sensor. That means they'd have had to put something like a 10.x MP sensor in the device (like some Motorola Devices used) which would have given them the headroom for 4K. This is why the new iPhones have 12MP - it was pretty much required for 4K (the image quality in daylight is comparable to previous models and low light is worse).

    With an 8MP iSight Camera, you have to crop the sensor to get a 16:9 AR for the video, and doing that on an 8MP sensor leaves you with something like 6MP in the image. 4K video has an 8MP image.

    It the iSight camera was a native 16:9 Sensor and they used no Software Stabilization, it would be possible to do 4K on it, but neither of those are the case.
