iPad start up problem and screen lock out

Hi there
When starting up The screen goes as far as the apple logo then just stops.
The screen then periodically go blank and seems to shut down.
After a while it comes back on as far as the apple go screen, then it freezes.
I have switched it off, left it and then restarted it but nothing.
I have pressed down the on/off button but to no avail!
I do not know what to do, please help!!!

Connect it to iTunes and try to restore your iPad.

Thanks for your reply!
Unfortunately that is not possible as there is not a mac/mac book in our house.
I guess I need to go to the Apple store.........
