I've never purchased an Apple product, I was holding off on getting a refurbished iPad 4 b/c I heard the iPad 5 would be announced in October. So, are the iPad 5 and Air the same thing?

No! Air is the thinner version of the full size iPad! iPad 1-4 have the same looks! Air looks like the iPad Mini!

The iPad Air is 5th full size tablet, so I would say it's the iPad 5, but has been named by Apple as iPad air
