Can I register a friend with Samsung smartphone to iMessage him from my iPad ir2 ios9.3?

How can I iMessage friends from my iPad Air 2 iOS 9.3.1 when I don't know what Brand of mobile device they have - phone or tablet??

Please provide answer in non-geeky language! I am not tech savvy!

Welcome to iMore! iMessage is pretty intuitive. Just send the message to the phone number you're trying to text. iMessage will determine if it needs to be sent as an iMessage or an SMS/MMS.

You can't send SMS from an iPad unless you have it paired with an iPhone and have Text Forwarding enabled.

To the OP, if you only have an iPad and don't have an iPhone, then you will not be able to send a iMessage to a "Samsung smartphone". You will need to find/use a suitable third party application.
