Is this an upgrade over the mini 2?

It depends on your needs. To some people it is and to others it isn’t.

You only need to upgrade if your current iPad is not performing well enough I know it looks shiny, but more shiny stuff will come haha.

    (iPad Pro 9.7) Improvements:
    + 12mp Camera vs 5mp
    + 4K video recording vs 1080p
    + A9x vs A7 processor.
    + Double the RAM
    + Bluetooth 4.2 vs 4.0

If you were getting the 10.5" iPad Pro then I would say that's a pretty big upgrade and we'll worth it.

My mini 2 seems to function well enough other than having to watch my remaining drive space and the battery degradation. I'll probably wait awhile.

I love my mini 2. It’s only 16GB but I only use it to do iMore, news and chase mobile. Also web browsing. So I don’t need a lot of space. But like other members said, it what you want out of your device.

This iPad does not have the 12mp camera, 4K video, or an A9x. It has an 8mp camera, 1080p video, and a standard A9 chip. Still definitely an upgrade over a mini 2 but I think you're thinking of the 9.7 Pro not the 2017 iPad 9.7.

Yeah the naming is a bit confusing for sure. There must be a better way to keep the confusion down.

Spec-wise its definitely an upgrade. It's faster, has a better display (colour gamut), better camera, and will see more future OS updates that the mini 2. All that aside, surprisingly the thing I've appreciated the most coming from the mini 2 was the addition of Touch ID.

The iPad Mini 2 has an arguably better screen. Same Display Resolution: 2048-by-1536-pixel, but the iPad Mini 2 has a Pixel Density: 326 ppi vs. iPad 5G Pixel Density: 264 ppi. But you are correct that color gamut is not the best with the Mini 2. Still not too bad.

I'm going to disagree about the "better" screen, at least from what I know about the two devices. I believe the iPad 5th Gen (2017) has a better screen in terms of things like having the P3 color gamut and being brighter, just that the pixels aren't as dense.

I don’t see the comparison just because it’s much bigger. To me the new or current or just “iPad” model of 2017 is a perfect upgrade if you have an older iPad that’s pre-64 bit, not as much RAM and not performing with up to date apps you value.
