Honestly, I'm considering getting a ipad 4 in addition to my mini, but don't know if this is a mistake. The thing I want the ipad 4 is to read comics and watch video on. I think the bigger screen will be more immersive for video and the form factor is better suited for comic reading. Also, retinas pretty awesome. Also, I'm considering using the larger ipad 4 as kind of a desktop/laptop replacement. I still have the family PC, but I was thinks of buying a ipad 4 as kind of a lap top substitute for myself. Since its cheaper than a MacBook.

But really, I'm not sure if that's just overkill. And I'm going to probably want a new ipad mini when it gets retina.

Is a full sized ipad a good substitute for a laptop? Should I just wait to see if the new full size ipad coming probably later this year is any different? Or is the ipad 4 plenty fast enough?

Is the iPad a replacement for a laptop? In my situation, no it is not, but it depends on your situation. You have a Family PC and an iPad Mini already so you should have a pretty good gauge on whether or not an iPad 4 is necessary especially in regard to being a laptop replacement. What you can so on the iPad 4, you can do on the iPad Mini. The screen size and retina display option are the only obvious differences. Having said that, as tech enthusiasts, we can talk ourselves into getting anything. It's only after we've purchased something do we realize that it was not necessary. Will you be the same way if you purchase the iPad 4?

Maybe. Honestly, I was going to use my credit card to pay for it if I did get it.

Some of it could be I think my ipad mini is secretly damaged or something. It's like, I have this anxiety that it's not performing right due to weird internal stuff. Like, it got dirt or something in it and it's effecting it. I know it's dumb, but I have anxiety.

I'm not judging, my friend and no, it's not dumb. Furthermore, it's your money and your choice, and whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure I'll enjoy it if I did get it. I just wasn't sure if some of my reasons for wanting it was maybe to medicate my anxiety.

Like I said, main reason I wanted it was for comic reading, video watching, and I think it'll be more enjoyable to use as a home tablet to read on or read flip board.

And I think some games might play better on a bigger screen.

I just gave my mother an iPad as a laptop replacement. It really depends on what you are going to honestly do with it. If you have a family PC then you would have a fall back if you needed to do something that you could not on the iPad.

Like D said, its your money, so you get to make the decision... personally, I had an iPad 3 and gave it to my wife when I got my Mini. For me, the Mini is perfect... but I like Rocky Road ice cream, but Mr Baskins & Mr Robbins sure sell a lot mint chocolate chip and cherry cheese cake. The point being, different people like different stuff. What works for me or D or someone else may not work for you.

I would, however, suggest that in my case, any iPad is not really a replacement for a MacBook Pro ... but again, it might work for you. As D said, as techies, we can talk ourselves into and out of nearly decision that we really want to make.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I just think playing more complex games, reading news and web browsing, watching videos and reading comics would be more enjoyable on a full sized, retina ipad. Is their any reason to think he ipad 5 is going to be a big enough improvment that I should hold off and wait for that? Slimmer and lighter might not be a big deal to me because the big ipad is probably staying home. Really, only think I think I need a desktop for is managing my music in iTunes or google music.

I haven’t seen any rumored specs on the iPad 5... but I can’t imagine what extra features it could have to make it a significantly better device than the iPad 4, given your comments above... but again, you don’t need my permission, or anyone else's... good luck.

So owner ahead and bought a black 32gb iPad 4. Here are my thoughts thus far.

    1. God lord the screen is nice!

    2. Wow, this is sure larger than the mini. I know that's obvious, but after using a mini for almost a year it's kinda strange to use a 9.7 inch screen.

    3. I like watching videos on this a lot and browsing the web. Comics as well.

    4. Typing while gripping the tablet is kinda cumbersome.

    5. I'm digging the added performance. Things seem snappier than on the mini.

    6. Color gambit is awesome on this. Real rich colors.

    7. I bought a Smart Cover and I'm pretty sure it's the leather one. It says its for iPad 2 or later. Are all the iPads after iPad 2 around the saw size, so it's the reason why they only ever made one type of smart covers for full sized iPads.

I am noticing I'm having some buyers anxiety. Mainly because I feel weird spending over 600 dollars. But I'm sure I'm going to like it.

Do you think I'll be safe with this hardware at least for a few years?

How old are you and are you going to be paying credit card off when you get bill? Just asking as some people don't, then interest adds up and soon you've spend the same amount of money as a MB

I am noticing a lot of improvement running Ames. Things are buttery smooth.

I think I have a weird anxiety with electronics. Like, I'm always afraid they're going to be defective or get damaged or whatever. For example I brushed my ipad against my chest last night when I was using it in bed the bezel pulled a few of my hairs. Now I think my device is full of hairs, lol. It's very stupid.

Lol. But I assume I'm just being Paranoid. I pads are usually pretty sturdy, no? And there would be no way I could damage or effect it by it brushing against my chest.

No. Never. Why? I know I can simply return it to Apple and get a replacement without a hassle.

I meant more like paranoia of not super obvious damage. Like, if something is slowing your device down or effecting it's screen quality?

You should not have paranoia. You have a great product with a great company behind it. Like JustMe'D said...IF you have ANY problems, whether real or perceived, you just take it back to Apple and they take care of you. Paranoia smoothed!

    I guess I have a "shrine", too.

I have a collection of older devices that I no longer use... iPods of several types (iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Touch) and vintages... an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS. I have a first gen AppleTV, and a 2007 MacBook. I have a friend from whom I am trying to acquire a 20" iMac G5.

I have all the iPad models except the 4th gen. The grandkids use all of them when they come over (those without their own iPhones and iPod Touches)...

I still use these from time to time (the iPhones get used as iPods, as I don’t have any active full-size SIMs)...
