I was thinking with the much to die for Retina Display capable of playing Full HD videos I thought the optimum had been achieved as far as having a full HD screen was concerned but no, I was wrong and I am shocked and surprised that the out of the world Hyped iPad-3 still cant do this. I am talking about playing FULL HD videoss there is still gonna be those Black bars above and below a HD video while playing it in the iPad-3 because of the orientation of the iPad-3 which is 4:3 and most of the HD videos shot in 16:9 ratio. I am wondering why did they not consider this aspect while maing this out of the world screen, I mean cmon Samsungs Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer Prime all have the 16:9 ratio !! Could Apple have not done the same thing with the iPad-3 especially when they were doing it with a intention of taking a quantum leap over its competition.

I am shocked and saddened to know this. I was hoping so much to play all the HD videos at its full glory in the new iPad, But I dont think thats gonna be possible because of the iPads Orientation ? So films are either sandwiched by black bars or have to be cropped to fit which I hate !!

The 4:3 ratio makes the iPad useful in both portrait and landscape orientations. A 16:9 ratio is great for landscape, but not ideal for portrait. That's why Apple did it that way.

But inspite having a 16:9 orientation the Samsung Galaxy Tab I think also the Asus rotates and works in both modes Landscape and Portrait Jolly well !!

Not really. The iPad's ratio is close to that of a piece of paper. Works great with documents. As far as playing full HD, yes the iPad can play 1080p video natively. Of course it needs to letterbox the top and bottom portions. But to say it can't play 1080p video at full resolution is incorrect.

This information was well publicized prior to release of the iPad 3rd Generation. I can't imagine anyone would be surprised that 1080p would be letterboxed.

Easy with shock and awe my friend, anyone here can tell you that there's we're no surprises as far as the letterbox orientation was concerned. I believe this option suite other purpose for when you're not watching movies like work and productivity content. It makes for a more versatile device.

But thats what I am not able to understand !! people here are suggesting that if the orientation is 16:9 a tablet cannot perform other functions besides playing a movie. Had that been the case Tablets like Samsung Galaxy Tab and Asus Transformers Prime would have not been out there.

on a side note, in spite of the upgraded 1gb RAM the issue with safari reloading the tabs when lots of apps open is still present. so i guess you can add that to the list of "The ipad 3 STILL can't do this" as well.....
    what a shame....

so OP... you'd rather have a long, slender, optimized for 16:9 but little else, over a 4:3 device that has versatility beyond just watching movies?? reading a digitial book on the ipad is way more pleasant... and dealing with black bars in a minor issue imo...

but to each their own... have fun with your Galaxy Flab or Asus Optimus Prime...

Finally, a worthwhile discussion here - first thing first, if aimed to maintain 16:9 on an iPad then we're talking about a device that is roughly 14" long...that's not happening. I admit that video may not be the strong point but I rather have 4:3 to surf the web, edit images, and a plethora of other activities. This isn't about what the iPad cannot do but about what faults you can find in the device. For me the trade of is easy.

I have an Android tablet, but only use it for wide screen video or when the iPad is charging (like now). Its very awkward in portrait mode and just unpleasant to use. Its like driving an old beat up Ford Escort when your BMW is in the shop.

BTW I'm upgrading my 1st gen iPad to the new one. I would never consider getting another Android tablet.
