    No, for data it will use wifi if available. In that case you still want 3g on to receive calls.

    If 3G is off, voice calls will use the cellular voice network.

    Absolutely right; I was sort of assuming that the OP was referring to the cell network in general as 3G. Either way, there's really no need to turn off 3G when you're on wifi.
