problems with ical notification. wont change

My wife just got an ipad. I have updated it to the latest 4.3.1 and I told her how to start using Ical (which I use on the Iphone all the time with no problems). The problem is when she puts in an appointment she does not want to have a notification or alert. So we put in NONE. Then it reverts back to 10 minutes. So all appointments and notes have a 10 minute before alert. I have checked settings and it does not give any options in the calendar section to make changes. She does not use any imported calendars, but only the Apple one. Anyone have any suggestions how to fix this?
