I wonder if I could use any other service provider for GSM than AT&T.. Or iPad 2 3G is locked to AT&T only.

Nope... at least not in the US... the only other GSM carrier of any size in US is T-Mobile which uses a different band for 3G...

Besides, it would have to be jailbroken and unlocked... not sure there's an unlock for the current baseband anyway...

iPads are unlocked anyway so providing you get a SIM only mobile broadband you can just pop it in and off you go.

So wait. Is the iPad able to handle another SIM card from another company without jailbreaking it?

Depends on if they're still using those microsim cards. Also depends on the 3G frequencies (you can check the frequency on Apple.com though). But they're not locked down otherwise.

Yeah, If they don't use Microsims then you can use a SIM cut tool (available on eBay and such). Most carriers will support at least one of the frequencies so chances are you'd be ok.

iPad 2 is unlocked and uses a micro sim .. So you could cut down a T-Mobile Sim and put it in there, but as stated before it does not support their 3G bands, so you would have a Edge iPad. Pretty slow data IMO. There are some smaller regional carriers in the US that are at&t roaming partners, I would speculate that you would get 3G with their sims.

So i can take the iPad 2 to India and just cut their local sim card to fit in the iPad 2 without jailbreaking or anything?

Assuming the frequencies used in India are the same frequencies that AT&T uses. Yes.

If the Freq are different then it will work on Edge?

The frequencies must be supported whether it's EDGE or 3G.

US GSM bands are 850 and 1900... most of the rest of the world is 900 and 1800...

That said, the GSM iPad is quad band, so yes, if you can't get the 3G frequencies, you should be able to get EDGE to work.
