I changed my passcode on my phone but it somehow requires my apple id to confirm the change. I couldn't remember my apple id password. so I started the password reset process a few times. Every time I received a message saying I won't be able to reset the password within two three days. However, everyday I received an alert saying I need to confirm my passcode change in iCloud which I don't know what that means and what I could do without my password. Finally I received a message yesterday saying that I could reset the apple id password now. So I tried to reset the password by using the apple web site on my computer. However, it needs a phone confirmation to reset which requires passcode. I tried my old and new passcode and neither one of them work. I was using face id previously. My phone is disabled. I called the Apple support the only way out is to reset the phone. I am very much baffled why neither passcodes would work. The support told me the encryption key is stored on my phone locally. But it does not explain why neither passcode works. Apple offers no solution but resetting the phone.

I am so frustrated now because I have to reset my entire phone because of this and I don't have the latest backup.

I am not sure which forum this belongs. Any help is appreciated.

I am sorry that you were having these difficulties and understand how frustrating this is for you. I think your only option at this point is to contact Apple support and work with them directly I have done this in the past and they are very helpful. You will have to be prepared to correctly respond to you identifying questions and keep in mind that this is for your own protection.

I have already contacted Apple Support and I was told to reset my phone. That is the reason that I decided to ask the community for help.

I would go ahead and set it up as new. A back up might contain the issue you want to fix. It is a PITA to do, but may be your only good option. I would suggest getting an Apple Support rep on another phone to help with the process, in case you run into ID issues.

The reason that I reported this issue here is hoping Apple will fix their faulty passcode reset process involving Apple ID. This added security without fully being tested causes more damage than what it is worth.

There would not have been a problem if you had not forgotten your password.

The reason that I am writing here is hoping that Apple would fix this passcode reset bug. The seemingly added security involving Apple ID causes more damage than what is worth. I would have ended up with a phone needs to be setup as a new and no access my Apple ID. This passcode reset process is clearly not fully tested by Apple.

The only reason that I was able to reset my Apple ID password is because I have an Apple Watch which allowed me confirm my Apple ID password reset request. Without the watch, I would have been completed toasted.

Be sure to store your Apple ID somewhere safe.

To be honest, after reading all of the social engineering resets of people's passwords of other services by bad actors, I'm glad that Apple makes it as hard as they do.
