The way I understand how the optimized battery charging works. Is it learns your pattern of when you take the device off the charger and charges the phone to 80% and then charges it to 100 % just before you normally take it off the charger.
This is correct, but it only happens when you actually have a notification that optimized charging is happening, and I believe it only happens when you are using high amperage charging (i.e., 10w charging or higher.) So far I have seen the notification only twice, the last time about a week ago, and the notification said that my phone would be scheduled to finish charging at 4:30 am - about 90 minutes before I usually wake up.
So, if you actually saw the optimized battery charging notification, the notification had a time that was significantly past 4 am, and the phone was at 98%, then something wasn't right. But if you never saw the optimized battery notification, then it was just doing normal charging.
You can actually tell if there is optimized charging by looking at settings / battery - the charge graph will show a little lightning symbol at the time that the phone was held to 80%.
