Unwanted Badge App icon on Google Maps

Iphone 7Plus, iOS 10.3.3

The home screen icon for Google Maps shows a 1 'out of the blue' with nothing on the app itself showing anything amiss. In Settings / Notifications - 'Google Maps' does not show, thus I cannot deselect the 'Badge App Icon'. I have rebooted the phone, then uninstalled & reinstalled Google Maps to no avail..

I do not have a badge on my Goog Maps icon, and never have. But have you tried going into the app, tap the "hamburger" icon in the far left of the search bar to expose the Google sidebar, and tap settings to look at the notifications settings?

Thanks - I had nothing obvious, BUT had to enable 'background navigation instructions' ( trial & error) and it went away....
