Podcasts don't update without app being open

Title says it all really. I have podcasts set to give me notifications and download them when they are available, checking every hour. However, I never get a notification, nor do they download without the app being open. Is this the same for everyone else?

I don't follow podcasts like I used to. I mean I listen on occasion but I'm not 'subscribed' to any. Anyway, try enabling background app refresh for the Podcast to see if that helps.

Settings - General - Background App Refresh, and then toggle the button next to Podcast.

Thanks for the reply. That was already activated and all the other settings are correct, it just doesn't work.
