Hard Drive for iPod 4g with iFile

I have an 8gb iPod 4g. I saw a video where someone has the camera attachment for the ipad and uses it to connect a usb hard drive. So I set out and bought the camera attachment, and dug up a portable hard drive (Maxtor mini III). I plugged it all in and of course my luck with technology, didn't work. I got an error saying this accesory is not supported.

Is there any way to configure a drive with an iPod?
