Message Issue: Can't use camera to attach a photo in the messages app...

I was out doing some last minute Christmas shopping yesterday and was sending my wife pictures of gifts for her opinion. Here is the issue:

I wrote a text message, pressed the camera icon to "take a photo", attached the photo and sent with no problem the first time. Immediately after, I pressed the camera icon again, but the camera would not initiate. The screen went black and stayed black. I had to close out of the messages app and then I can could take and add a photo. I repeated the issue again. I took the first photo in a text no problem. Second photo the screen is black.

This was not an iMessage, my wife has a basic flip phone. Anybody have the same issue?

I haven't seen this but I usually send pics after I take the picture from the photo app

Exact thing happening to me. But we are using imessage as both ends are iphones. I tried deleting many of the saved message-attached-photos (contact details) thinking it was a capacity thing, but no luck. Camera is initiating but not activating (black screen).
