Does Auto brightness help save battery?

I have always been in the understanding that auto brightness drains the battery but after ios 8 when you go under battery usage it recommends that auto brightness be turned on? Any thoughts

Depends on how you use it. The idea is to keep the brightness down as much as possible. If auto brightness helps you achieve that, then yes it does. A bright screen will eat battery worse than anything else.

Huh. It's always been my understanding the auto brightness would save battery life. In theory it adjusts itself to the environment your in hence saving power.

I permanently have it always on and never concerned with battery power.

For years I've heard to turn auto brightness off to save battery. The lower the screen brightness the better.
