Wifi Networking??

Hi folks. I would like to know what this this "wifi networking" does. I find it using my location service all the time and its not very kind to my battery. What happens if I turn if off? Thanks.

It allegedly helps improve the accuracy of locations services. That is the message that you'll get if you were to attempt to use the Maps app's voice guided navigation feature with Wi-Fi disabled.
