AirPlay via wifi direct ?

I remember reading around June that with iOS 8 you won't need to be on the same network as your AppleTV to use AirPlay anymore. It would work adhoc via wifi direct. I've updated my iPhone 5s to iOS 8 and my Apple TV yesterday. I can't figure it out.

Maybe the feature isn't active yet ? Anyone else have any luck with it or suggestions ? I've tried turning on Bluetooth too in case it uses Bluetooth to authenticate but wifi to AirPlay kinda like how airdrop works.

maybe it didn't make the release date, perhaps in iOS 8.1 then.

or maybe it's an iPhone 6 and 6 Plus feature only ?
