After bouts of crashing/freezing, etc., all of my text messages are gone. How can I retrieve them?

iOS 7.1.2 on iPhone 5.

To make a long story short, today my phone ended up freezing/crashing/restarting, and upon opening up the messages app after rebooting, all my text messages were gone. All of them. I did a few soft and hard reboots, reset network settings and even did a restore from backup with no results. The strange thing is when I check the usage it states the Messages app is using
1.6 GB which is pretty much all my previous texts.

Any takes on this one?

You've done everything I would have thought of doing.

At this point I would consider calling Apple support.

Is there a reason you need those text messages? Have you not read them already?
