I saw this on Prismatic and the news stories updated so I am unable to provide a link. But you can tap the signal dots to show signal strength with just a couple steps to initiate. Same process will turn the function off if you dislike it.
1. Dial *3001#12345#* and hit call
2. This brings up Field Test, hit the signal bars and watch them change to signal strength.
3. If you hit the home button this will not stay, if you want it to stay functional proceed to the next steps.
4. Hold the power button until the power off slider pops up.
5. Without releasing the power button, hold the home button down until the phone resets and turns back on. Once the phone resets you can release the power button.
6. That's it! You're done! Happy switching.
7. If you decide you don't want the functionality just repeat the process.
