Try a reboot, and then allow the iPhone to go into sleep mode and check on its progress in about 10 minutes or so. Hopefully, that'll work for you. Personally, I do not have automatic updates enabled -- at least not yet. Maybe I will one of these days...:)

Maybe you need to turn on automatic downloads for apps as well as updates. Since you have the apps switch set to off, try switching it on and see what happens.

Mine update every so often. My ipad is still sitting here with 2 updates pending though. My iphone was showing 2 apps to update and then it finally did it on its own.

Last night my iPhone 5, iPad mini & iPad 3 all auto updated within seconds of each other but nothing since, & that was with the apps toggle off & auto update toggle on! It's proper doin my head in, it seams so random at the moment, today I've been at home on wifi all day & I'm still waiting to see "Happy Street" update on my iPhone 5 :-/

My iPhone 5 (AT&T) will not auto update over cellular no matter what I do. My iPad works fine, but my phone does not. I've rebooted the phone, cycled the settings, and even hard reset it.

Yes, it needs to be on for everything you want updated. In the screen shot above you only have it turned on for IOS Updates. Not Apps, Music, and Books.
