Recording on-screen video

So, I've tried using the Screen Recorder jailbreak app, and besides slowing down responsiveness, video file size is huge, and takes forever to transfer over the Wi-Fi network. The only alternative I've found is to pump the HDMI through an RCA adapter, and then put that into a video recording box. That whole set-up will end up costing around $300, which I'd rather not spend unless I have to. Anyone have any slightly more affordable suggestions?

How about VNC and screen record the desktop's screen? The animations won't be 30fps but it works.
