Notification Sounds Help

Is there a way to change the alert sounds for notifications such as hanging with friends and stuff like that? My wife and I have the same alert for those and it's getting frustrating beyond belief.

The app can program in a selection of tones (tweetings, for example, does this, and PingMe is going to), but aside from that (or a jailbreak), there's not an option.

Wow, this is really really disappointing. I'm new to the iPhone and it seems like there is something else I find everyday that this phone can not due. I still have a few more days before my 14 day return period is over. I don't know what to do! I wish Verizon still offered 30 days!
