iBooks on Macbook Air

I don't have an iPad but would love to download and read books on my Macbook Air.

2 questions:
First, why doesn't Apple offer iBooks for the Macbook?

Last, does anyone know of a reader I can download and use to read ebooks?

I don't believe apple has iBooks for their computers. However, amazon makes a kindle app for the Mac. You can find it in the Mac app store.
