Here are the steps I took to install ios5 on my iphone. reset computer, reset iphone, sync iphone and finally update to ios5. Prior to that I continually got errors.

i was trying to upgrade just like the other 1 billion people. Well now my phone will only show the black screen with white apple then it switches to the loading circle. When I try to connect to the computer nothing happens. Please help!!!!!

I got the error code also but I just clicked the restore tab and iOS 5 got installed. Hope that helps some. Don't know why that worked.

It worked!!! I'm now running iOS5. Finally!!! It does it automatically in the restore process.

I was able to update my iPad 2 but when I go to update the iPhone 4 iTunes does this "backing up iPhone" thing then after awhile it quits and gives me some error message. I've restarted the computer and still get to a certain point and...error message or an "extracting software" followed by an error message. Hell I've even attempted to restore the iPhone....still error message. I don't get it iPad updated fine WTF is up with the iPhone not updating?

i edited the host file and i'm still not able to restore. i'm just going to go eat dinner and watch my shows. i'll come back late tonight and see if the servers have let up at all.

Me too! None of my apps are on my phone. How do I sync my apps? They're still in iTunes.

Using Win7 64 bit here. After maybe 6 hours and 30 unsuccessful attempts (restarting PC, iPod, disabling Firewall, Antivirus, changing IP address,and every other 'fix' that's been listed), I finally got this to work. It could well have been the luck of the draw but I used a cmd prompt (run as Administrator) then:

ipconfig /release

followed by

ipconfig /renew

Then ran the whole Update process again through iTunes 10.5 and it worked. Hope this helps, if not just be patient.

Just do it manually, or restore from backup. Did you back it up before you restored to iOS 5? If so, your backup will be there and your apps should reappear.

When doing the shift+restore method, will that erase all of my ipod's content? I have almost 55 gigs of data on my ipod and I REALLY don't want to have to re-transfer all of it...

Are you getting the 3194 or 3200 error?

Yeah I did. It's restoring right now.

I did the restore method, but now all my photos and contacts are gone... and it said my back up was corrupted or couldn't do it. I'm trying to figure it out now.

Of course, I backed it up before iOS5! My apps are syncing now... thank you! I'll keep everyone updated. I'm freaking if I lost all my photos, contacts, and SMS.

All my photos, contacts, and texts were still there when I first restored. So you should be fine.

It did it on it's own when the restoring process was finished.

No, I have no idea. How are you updating? Straight up? or you did a restore?

I had finally gotten the iPhone to somehow begin the update process!!! Then just as it was finishing the update process and verifying it with Apple...BAM error message!!

simple solution for 3194 error, install update on different computer that does not have the gs.apple.com line in the host file, ill find out what i lost (if anything by doing this) though at this point as long as i have my contacts ill be content, i already miss being jb hopefully iOS5 will make up for that

edit: make sure you back up your photos and other things as you will lose them. maybe not the best workaround but at least i finally got iOS5 to load
