I need help....

Okay, so I bought an iPhone 3gs 16gb with 4.2.1


I jailbroke it with greenpoison and I wanted to restore it to jailbreak it with redsn0w so that I can unlock it

Now I could not restore to original 4.2.1 (I got the error "could not restore iphone. this device is not elligible for the requested build") but I could restore it to original 4.1 firmware.

I would like to upgrade to 4.2.1 (I'm not sure about upgrading to 4.3 and trying to unlock)


So how do I upgrade back to 4.2?

Btw, I have mac and windows. I did the jailbreak and restore on my mac.

Before that: are you sure you can unlock? What is the baseband?

Also, now that it is on 4.1 I tried updating to 4.2.1 and it did not work

the baseband is 5.15.04. So I need to upgrade to the ipad baseband to unlock. But I don't understand why I can't upgrade to 4.2.1.

Sounds like it doesn't have SHSH saved for that firmware.

Apple stops signing them shortly after a new os comes out. if you dont have them saved and there has been a new os out for a while, you may be SOL.

Not sure, switched from my At&t iphone to Verizon iPhone when it came out. When I was playing the unlock game it was more about the baseband. Sorry I cant be of more help.

its cool. You've plenty help man. Is it possible to find SHSH back ups for download? (I wanted to start froma fresh phone anyway) I imagine stock SHSH back ups are available

I think they are tied directly to your phones imei code which can't be changed. Not sure if there is a work around.

Okay, so whats the best way for me to jailbreak and unlock the phone? I'm thinkin that for now, I am going to use the latest redsn0w, jailbreak it on 4.1 and upgrade to the iPad baseband.

Will I be able to upgrade to a custom 4.3 firmware later on?

Why are you making it into two steps? You can just use Sn0wbreeze to jb 4.3.3 and install the iPad baseband all at the same time:
