I have a 3GS 4.1 with 05.14.02 and jailbroke with Limera1n. Greenpois0n did not work for me but I don't know if that has anything to do with 05.14.02...
Baseband has nothing to do with jailbreak. The iOS firmware version has to do with jailbreak, and right now every iOS firmware version besides betas can be jailbroken.
Baseband firmware relates to unlocking your phone for use with any service provider. As of right now 05.14.02 is not able to be unlocked...
There has never been a 05.12.02 as far as I know... Its either 05.14.02 which came with 4.1 or 05.13.04 which came with 4.0...

i have been trying to jailbreak my 3gs with gp and all that happens is it goes to a white screen and then says jailbreak failed/ try again (tried like 20+ times). should i try limerain?
i wanted to use another service provider but reading this thread it looks like thats not possible, is this something that will change when 4.2 comes out perhaps?
any help would be appreciated

I had the same problem. Tried several times to JB using GP and it kept failing. I even tried restoring my phone before JB'ing and it still failed. Don't know why. Limera1n worked on first attempt and everything seems to be working fine.
good news! managed to jailbreak using limera1n instead of gp. the only problem i had was i am using windows 7 so i had to run as administrator and the jb worked straight away not sure why gp would not work tho as it did my touch.
the next problem i've got now is to unlock....that's another story by the looks of things!
