Icon Replacement Question

I spent a few minutes today swapping out the pink BiteSMS icons for the traditional green Apple versions. Everything went fine, but I noticed that .app folders show up in a few places--I used the private/var/stash/app folder.

So my question is, did I just get lucky, or does it not matter which folder you use, as long as it's for the correct app?

(This was with iphonebrowser, by the way, and just a direct replacement, not a winterboard theme.)
