What I'm trying to accomplish is a replacement for my "factory unlocked" Palm Treo 650 which I have used for the last 5 years in EU and USA. The problems with the new Palm Pre seems to be : Reliability, no DataViz (with sync), no TomTom Nav 6 with built in maps, can not sync ( to Mac OS 10.5) my Memos & ToDoLists. All of these problems seem to be corrected on some ( ??? ) model of the iPhone except for the "unlocked " feature. I hoped to solve this "unlocked" feature with a Rebel Card or software unlock. But Rebel card does not wok with a iPhone 3GS. Which model iPhone to buy ??

If I buy an iPhone does it have to be registered with Apple to allow me to buy and install apps via my Mac ( OS10.5.8) ?

If not the iPhone, can you recommend another phone for me ?

    Thank for your help.

I'd recommend getting a factory unlocked iPhone 3G[s] from  Apple, but it costs like $800-$900.

    No lies.

OR, you could just buy a software unlocked (hacked) iPhone off of craigslist for like, maybe $500-$600.

If you're going to buy the official  Apple factory unlocked iPhone, I suggest that you wait until mid June/July. That's when the new iPhone will be released, an for the same $800-$900, you get the new iPhone.
