Hi guys, forgive me but I am a complete noob, just trying to help my little sis who upgraded the i phone i bought her off ebay to the latest 3.1.3 firmware.

it seems it can be unlocked using BootNeuter.

is this correct?

if so, can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or something?

Once the device is upgraded to 3.1.3 you're stuck there. It can't be unlocked (at all) and can only be jailbroken if it was previously jailbroken and you stored your SHSH on Cydia.

It's hardly useless, but you can't unlock it for use on another carrier, and may never be able to do so.

This info in incorrect. As a 2g iPhone you can still JB and unlock using redsn0w. You have to download the 3.1.2 restore ipsw and point redsn0w at that when it asks. Directions can be found pretty easily, either here or on another site.

You can only do this if you have your SHSH on file on Cydia. Otherwise there is no way to restore to anything. Apple is no longer signing the older firmware.

You don't need to restore to 3.1.2. If you restore to 3.1.3, you can use redsn0w to JB and unlock by pointing it at the 3.1.2 restore firmware, no Apple signing required!

And can i do all this with a mac laptop? or do i need to use a PC.

You can go to the dev teams website or blog.

And yes, you can do this on a Mac OR a PC. The redsn0w method WILL work but only on a 2G.

WHY? Because Apple NEVER updates the baseband in ANY firmware update to the 2G. So the baseband can be eternally unlocked, as long as you can jailbreak. This is the only perk to the iPhone 2G.

So, ask Tremain where you can download the official 2G 3.1.2 firmware. Open up redsn0w. When it asks you to point redsn0w to the firmware, you browse to the 3.1.2 firmware and NOT the 3.1.3.

But make sure you download the correct version of redsn0w. I THINK it's 0.94, but I can be wrong. Double check on the dev teams website/blog.

I typically get the ipsw's off the iclarified.com site. Make sure you get the one that is for the 2g since they are all together.

and roll your firmware back! i did then run blackra1n done.... i dont know what grandma is talkin about???
from all the posts ive read of hers shes giving false info. it didnt have to be jailbroken before. and u dont need no ssh.

i bought my phone 3.1.3 brand new. rolled it back to 3.1.2 with ispw 3.1.2 firmware. blackrained it im good to go!!!

2g's are completely unlockable and jailbreakable NO MATTER WHAT they have on them. I did a full and total restore of a 2g, so it has the newest stuff Apple will allow you to get, then I ran redsn0w and choose 3.12 firmware and it unlocked and jailbroke easily.

3g and 3gs are a totally dif matter.
