Can anything go wrong while trying this? or what are the negatives and positives of jailbreaking? can i still upgrade my iphone and apps? thanks

If anything goes wrong you can sync with iTunes restore as new phone, you'll be good to go. Short answer is yes you can upgrade both to all the latest and greatest and jailbreak with blackra1n.
