unlocking iphone

say if i unlocked my iphone 3g s and then decided to get rid of jailbreak or wanted to update so there was no jailbreak available or something
would my unlock go away or something
does it need jailbreak to keep it unlocked or so?

If you want to update the firmware the jailbreak will go away as well as the unlock, unless soem one comes out with an unlock feature w/o jailbreak.
