Though I have high hopes about the good that will come from this update, I am still going to err on the side of caution and give it a whirl with my iPad Mini first before updating my 5s.

Okay and I guess you just out it the folder that normally iTunes puts them?

Not necessarily. Use the Option-click (Shift-click for Windows users) on Update in iTunes. This will allow you to navigate to wherever you stored the file on your computer to allow you to use a specific .ipsw file.

This OTA update should not use as much space as the first iOS 8 update of 5.7 gb. That said, I would still allow about 6 gb of available space for the update in 15 minutes.

After the 8.0.1 update issue it may be best to wait a bit anyway. Haven't had the issue before but that one was bad. Very little likelihood it happens again but I won't be refreshing at 10am PST to update!

Correct. This is a delta update, not rewriting the whole base OS.
