I understand this is an ignorant question, but what the heck is a widget?

Not an ignorant question. In ios8 you have the ability to put informational apps (widgets) in notification center.

With the espn app you can get updates for your favorite teams just by pulling down on notification center.

Thanks. I will update my SportsCenter app and see if I can figure it out.

As far as the sign-in issue goes: ESPN apps, especially the radio app, have had a history of not accepting my sign ins. It's a server side thing, I guess.

I've noticed Sports Center uses a lot of battery.

Sent from my ancient but trustworthy iPhone 5

Mine wakes up my phone about 15 minutes per hour but my battery might only drop about 1-4% per hour still.
