Not an ignorant question. In ios8 you have the ability to put informational apps (widgets) in notification center.

With the espn app you can get updates for your favorite teams just by pulling down on notification center.

They are a great feature but check your battery drain...hearing rumblings that some are much bigger than others.

As far as the sign-in issue goes: ESPN apps, especially the radio app, have had a history of not accepting my sign ins. It's a server side thing, I guess.

Mine wakes up my phone about 15 minutes per hour but my battery might only drop about 1-4% per hour still.

I think that my sports center widget is only updating when I pull down the notification shade.
