OK do here is a weird one and I dont know if it's even iOS 8 but my facetime camera isn't working on my iPhone 5s. I can't even say when it stopped working cause I don't use it that often. When I tried to use it tonight it was a black screen and then I was able to see the person but they couldn't see me. Tried reboot and still the same. Regular camera seems fine but when I try to switch over it goes black. Hardware or software...

nothing at all. I even tried another app- camera plus and tried to flip it to front facing and it froze like on main camera app. I'm leaning towards hardware

I had the same problem.
I had to shut down the phone and reboot it.
The camera works fine now.

Just an update. It was hardware. They replaced it with a new 5s. That should hopefully help my resale next month when I get the 6
