I haven't download ios8 yet as I'm still reading reviews. This might be a stupid question but will downloading OTA use less space as doing it via itunes? Will doing it via itunes take less time?

OTA will require some free space on your phone. iTunes generally will not. iTunes is probably more reliable than OTA.

OTA: no need to resync all your apps/music/etc. Require a lot of free space.
iTunes: more reliable. Need to sync everything back.

Both methods take about the same time. Please back up your phone to iTunes/iCloud before you attempt the upgrade either way.

I updated OTA today right when the update went live. They usually take about same amount of time.

I erased my phone then did OTA and restored backup from iTunes. Couldn't update through iTunes cuz It didn't show iOS 8 as available while my iPhone did. I was able to do my iPad OTA without erasing cuz it had plenty of free space.

Already decided my next iPhone will be 64 gigs so I don't have to deal with this crap of not having enough room anymore.

I've always updated iOS through iTunes since iOS 4 forward. I personally feel more comfortable with iTunes handling everything.

I did it ota. Worked fine. You have to have 4gb of free space though.

I've started doing iTunes since 7.1.2, as it's more reliable than OTA, had to do a number of restores & setup as new to fix bugs that have occurred due to OTA.

With OTA you're more likely to start using your phone during the download or preparing to install parts of the update, where as with iTunes it's tethered to a PC or Mac during the update.

Hey Chris I see you have been mulling updating your device and that's absolutely understandable just keep in mind this release is the public non beta version ready for all consumers updating over the air is a no brainer and after the initial storage usage you might even gain a little space after the install. If your not happy you can always restore like new at a later date

The main reason I've been waiting is for the servers to die down. i've been told on a few other boards is to wait a few days after major updates

I have always used iTunes for iOS updates and have never had an issue. Besides, it also saves a little time when you have three of the same device (5s x 3) to update because iTunes only downloads the installer once.

Generally, when an iOS update is first made available, I will general install it OTA, but within 24 hours, I will wipe the device and do a fresh install via iTunes. It has always worked well for me in this regard so why fix what's not broken...

Recommend? Definitely. Run smoother? Hmmm, I suppose so. I mean, I've done it so many times to where I don't think about it. It's just what I do.

I have no idea. Busy servers? Internet throttling? You can always start over in the morning....

A one point last night, mine said 23 hours remaining. It took about 4 hours after that point (not 23 hours) to finish.

But that was last night. Today should be quicker.
