Newsstand downloads in background?

Now with Newsstand new issues of magazines are supposed to download automaticly in the background. I have not been able to get that to work. Automatic download is enabled in settings but I still have to start downloads manually.

I subscribe to The Daily so I should have a new issue waiting every morning but no such luck.

I have 2 magazines on my ipad but nothing on my iphone. I thought they were supposed to go automatically to all devices?

The Daily has been intermittent for me... sometimes it downloads, sometimes not. I think they're still working the kinks out on NewsStand.

Magazines typically have not been formatted as "universal" apps that will work on iPhones and iPads... magazines I subscribe to are iPad only...

I have the new york times and I see it download every day.. A banner notification comes up
