Are you asking where it would be? It's the flash from the camera I believe. But, I don't even see where it is in the settings though.

General > Accessibility, and then tick LED Flash for Alerts 'on'.

The flash will be coming from the back of the phone (the Camera's flash).

Note that the LED only blinks for incoming phone calls, not emails, SMS etc. Drag!

yeah it flashes for everything, but it doesn't continuely flash until the notifacation is dismissed like the Blackberrys. It appears to only flash when the phone is actually making the alert. I didn't like it, and turned it off.

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to work in any position. Mine isn't working at all though, anyone have a suggestion?

I've heard that it only works in dark environments or when the phone is face down. Mine seems to work only when it feels like it.

I turned the led notification off and back on, then checked it by calling and texting myself. It wasn't working until I turned it off and back on again.

I really wish there were LED notifications like on BlackBerry and my previous Motorola Android phones but at least things have gotten a little better with iOS 5.

Same here. Apparently, every time you turn the phone off and back on, it breaks the notifications and you need to flip the switch off and back on.

Also, mine blinks for my alarm, Facebook, SMS/iMessage, incoming calls, and calendar alerts.

OK, I was getting frustrated with this, but realized it only works when the ambient light is low. But it works just fine for what it's intended to do.

Really? I had be buzz on my bb, with each notification set to a diff set of lights. The day I switched to the iPhone, I never even though twice about it, and still don't miss it. This is why I never even bothered to use the flash notification the iPhone has avail. I think using it on my bb raised my anxiety level of like "omg, what msg came in now" type of thing. :o as silly as that may sound lol.
