Yes. Use iMessage with another iMessage user and the bubbles are blue and gray.

But seriously, that's about it, as far as customization goes without jailbreaking.

Ugh, I don't understand why there isn't a background feature or bubble colors! That's the first thing I would have thought of. Why can't geniuses think of this?

Blue - Your iMessage message
Green - Your Text Message message
Gray - Someone else's text/iMessage message.

Well according to Murphy's law, it will be released once you are not near a computer to download it right away.

This is actually true because everywhere I'm reading is stating 10am pst. Which is exactly the time I start work at the hospital. And that means it won't be until 3am Thursday morning for me... Blah!!!!!

Yeah same, if it's not out by then, I'm taking my notebook (which is more like a desktop...) to school with me and am going to check again at 12 PM (or 2 PM my time - and I'll be in the middle of class =p)
