It should run fine, you just won't have access to some features that are available on the 4 and/or the 4S.

I'm not going to run iOS 5 on my old 3GS. Not after what happen to those that loaded iOS 4 on their 3G. While Apple is making it available to 3GS owner, I believe it will slow the device down by a lot.

Yeah, I'm running it. It's not slow, but iOS 5 does use more memory than iOS 4 did, so it could become slow if you're the type to load a lot of extensions through jailbreak.

I used to run a pile of extensions, but with the new OS, many of them are no longer needed, so I've found myself running mostly stock (just SBSettings as a notification widget).

When they are updated, I'll probably add Shrink and Folder Enhancer, but that's it. The new OS breathes new life into the 3GS with some of the really nice features like wifi syncing and the new notifications features.

    iOS5 is recommended here.

According to the video in this link iOS5 doesn't seem as if it slows the 3GS down at all.

How is the browser speed while running iOS5? I do a lot of web surfing and don't want to risk the speed that I get now running 4.2.1.

Look at it this way: the iPhone 3GS is still being sold (even free with contract) and it will be shipping with iOS 5. I hardly think tha Apple would ship unusable, sluggish phones. When iOS 4 came out it didn't rum too well on the older model iPhones but a software update quickly took care of that. I wouldn't expect Apple to make the same mistake again.

I think is about the same if not faster. The iOS 5 seems to improve pretty much everything from browsing to battery life

It will work just fine on 3GS. Just as smooth as ios4 will work. 2G and 3G couldn't handle it. Apple knows its stuff they wouldn't make ios5 available for 3GS if it wasn't just fine on it.

My upgrade isn't until May and I really don't want to pay full price. I bought the 3GS that David had for sale. I may be switching to Verizon when my contract is up, we'll see....
