Im using my iPad as a hotspot to download ios12...

(Because i am in an area with no wifi) and I have to ask : just how huge is this thing?
It says estimated time remaining 53 minutes
Or is it because of the hotspot ?

Depending on device, download is around 2.5 GB. My iPhone X was around 2.7 if I remember correctly.

Yep. I just moved to an area with no WiFi, no internet, I have unlimited data with Verizon so I used a hotspot and did it.
I really love it on my phone, but Apple isn’t letting me update my iPad for some reason. I can see the icon but it’s not clickable

I also use Hotspot to do minor updates but I go to my cousins for major ones.
