Thanks for your help!

I read where there is a new feature that will disable TouchID and FaceID for example, if someone is stealing your phone - something like pressing two side buttons simultaneously (which in theory you can do while pulling the phone out of your pocket). How does that work on an iPhone 7?

thanks again...

For anything older than an iPhone 8/8+/X that runs iOS 11, tap the sleep/wake button five times in succession. This will bring you to a screen with swipe to power off, swipe for emergency SOS, or cancel - but will also disable Touch ID until you enter your passcode.

Thanks doogald, what does one do on an 8 to disable touch id?

Press the wake/sleep and at least one of the volume buttons until the same screen comes up. You can think of it as squeezing the wake/sleep at the volume buttons at the same time with a grip across both.

You get a haptic feedback when you have pressed long enough.
