For those with AirPods, Automatic Ear Detection is disabled when you just updated to this beta.
I learned that myself the hard way.
Make sure to enable it if you were using it previously.

Not sure whether this option was there though before the update.

I have an extra 2 gigs of space after I updated on a 128GB 7 Plus.
You know what that tells me? The cluster sizes have gotten smaller so that space isn't as wasted as it once was.

For those that don't know what I'm talking about, let me explain. All file systems organize (for the lack of a better word) the space on a storage device into what are known as clusters. Only one file can exist in a cluster. For instance, if your cluster size is 4 KB and you have a 6 KB file that file will effectively take up two 4 KB clusters even though the file is 6 KB which results in a loss of 2 KB of storage space. Now this may not seem like such a big deal until you start thinking about how many files that could exist on the system that add up to less than a multiple of whatever the cluster size is. Oops. Wasted space!

Considering that HFS+, the file system that Apple uses, is nearly 30 years old. Yes, HFS+ is 30 years old! This is a file system that was originally designed for floppy disks not storage devices with GBs and GBs of space. I don't even want to think about how large the cluster sizes were. Good God almighty, the cluster sizes must have been HUGE!

Making the cluster size smaller reduces the amount of wasted space.

On my iPhone 7 Plus there is no noteworthy increase/decrease in battery life.

My phone was in the beta programme but was removed to diagnose a battery issue and put back to ordinary iOS.

I've read with interest reports of saved space with this beta. As someone with a 16GB phone space is of a premium. Is this space saving something most people have seen? If so I'll enroll my phone back in again

Everyone will see it. No exceptions. Apple implemented their newly redesigned file system that takes up less local storage space.

Wow I just checked my 16gb iPad mini, I was hitting the ceiling of the storage pre update. When I checked now I have over 4gb of space now! Thank you Apple!

So far, I have not really noticed anything bad about it. Gained some space, battery seems about the same after a day to settle in so I would say give it a shot. Just make sure you archive a backup in case things don't go as smoothly for you.

So with smaller file allocation units we have less slack.
I know with FAT32 when converted to NTFS in XP (remember THOSE days?) the cluster size was 512 bytes (1/2KB) which was great for reducing slack but had bad i/o performance. Don't know if that's the case here or if it even matters with nvme having much higher iOPS than mechanical drives, etc.

Less slack is always welcome especially when space is tight on our mobiles, that's for sure!
