No, it didn't fix it. It all depends on color and color shade. Here's a sample on my iPhone 5 running 10.2. You can see the difference.

Weird. I don't have darkening anymore on any of my wallpapers (any color) with my iPhone 7 or my Air 2. Yours doesn't seem as extreme as it once was on mine, at least.

Here's one that's odd. The only difference I made in the 2 is the status bar color. One red, one white. That's it. See the difference? It's on 10.1.1.

How did you do that with the status bar? Yes, I see the difference. Also, I'm using 10.2. That's when the darkening disappeared, when I updated to 10.2.

It's part of the wallpaper. I've been told that on the new beta 10.2.1 beta 2, the darkening is gone. We'll see.

We were not comparing apples to apples. I was upset at the darkening that was occurring from the lock screen to the home screen. You can see from the change wallpaper screen that this is no longer happening. The other two pictures show the original wallpaper and the lock screen, which does have a slight darkening on this wallpaper. However, on the white wallpapers I use, there is no darkening across the board (original, lock screen, home screen).

I haven't figured it all out. There has to be a rhyme or reason how it works. Solid white sometimes does great. Then a different color of a certain shade will not. A lighter color that has to use white text will be darkened. I hope they're right about no darkening in the newest beta.

This is the craziest thing ever. I have never noticed or heard of this, yet the examples are indisputable. Thanks guys, now I'm going to be hyper-aware of it lol. PS- I'm running 10.2.1 public beta.

I think I have found a solution to stop iOS 10 making wallpapers grey.

If you zoom in on your wallpaper when setting it, this appears to keep your background bright and not apply that grey look.

If you make it original size i.e. Not zoomed in to make it bigger then that is when it seems to be grey and not the original colour.

Hope it works for you as that appears to be working with me.

Im not sure if ut works for lock screen but this works for homescreen. Go to settings, then to wallpaper. Press the customize button on the right side (homescreen). Now at the bottom it should say pair, color, gradient, and photos. Press photos and select the photo of your choice. Voila you get your un-grayed wallpaper.

Are you still using iOS 10? This post is from 2016.
